- Safety Leadership and Expertise
- Fulfil role as a Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) at Vanderbijlpark and AMSA-wide.
- Attend and lead key Safety meetings as identified (e.g. FPS meetings).
- Coach and influence employee and contractor behaviour towards a proactive safety culture.
- Ensure compliance with Fatality Prevention Standards (FPS) and Life-Saving Golden Rules, acting decisively on any violations.
- Act decisively when hazards/unsafe conditions and behaviours occur.
- Address at risk behaviour and unsafe conditions (stop the work and wait until is corrected).
- Initiate Contractor NCRs on identification if non-compliances.
- Maintain high visibility on the shop floor to guide, empower, and coach employees and contractors in safety best practices to:
- Speak-up when it comes to Safety
- Provide information, advice and guidance to contractors where needed.
- Continuous assistance, guidance and coaching of employees/contractors on floor.
- Working periodically on standby
- Incident and Injury Management
- Conduct preliminary investigations (Gather of Information)
- Capture case/ injury on WorkSafe.
- Ensure proper classification and reporting in NIPPS, and that 24-hour reports are completed and submitted.
- Participate in and/or facilitate incident investigations (within 7 days) and compile Root Cause Analyses (RCA) for RWDC, LTI, and Fatalities using AMSA templates.
- Monitor and ensure timely closure of corrective actions (within 4 weeks) and escalate outstanding items to the GM level.
- Manage the closure process in NIPPS upon completion of all actions.
- Case Management
Coordinate and manage injury cases from incident to recovery including:
- Hospital accompaniment
- Completion of the RMA claim forms and submission to the emergency room reception
- Medical reporting and updates
- Communication with doctors and management
- Update AMSA safety performance system
- PSIF (Potential Serious Injury or Fatality) Management
- Evaluate, classify, and manage PSIFs daily in NIPPS.
- Direct non-valid PSIFs to the Safety Administrator for closure.
- Register a minimum of two PSIFs per month for REX (one with RCA) and ensure closure of actions within 2 weeks.
- Support continuous improvement by analysing PSIF trends and implementing corrective actions.
- Audits, Reporting, and Compliance
- Conduct at least three (3) Shop Floor Audits (SFA) per week, determine causes, assign responsible persons, and capture actions on WorkSafe.
- Attend monthly SHE Committee Meetings, GM SHE Meetings, weekly Plant Operations Meetings, and weekly LPA sessions.
- Provide input for weekly and monthly safety reports, including: 24-hour report status, investigation progress, and action closure on injuries and PSIFs to the Safety Administrator.
- Systems and Continuous Improvement
- Maintain and enhance the Health & Safety Management System in line with ISO 45001:2018 and AMSA standards.
- Analyse safety data, identify focus areas, and recommend improvement initiatives.
- Initiate and coordinate safety projects and campaigns to prevent incident recurrence.
- Provide specialist input during risk assessments, evaluating and approving risk ratings where required.
- Support Line Management with technical guidance and compliance actions.
- Specialised PPE Management
- Manage and control of specialised Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the area of responsibility.
- Ensure that specialised PPE requirements are correctly identified, approved, and communicated to relevant PPE suppliers.
- Address and resolve PPE-related issues in collaboration with end users and suppliers, ensuring timely feedback and corrective action.
- Participate actively in the PPE Committee, representing the assigned area of responsibility.
- Ensure PPE compliance, quality, and suitability in alignment with AMSA standards and operational needs.
Minimum requirements
· National Diploma (NQF 6/10) in Safety Management.
· Minimum 18 months in a heavy industrial or steel manufacturing safety environment.
· Strong knowledge of: Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, ISO 45001:2018, Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS or BBCare - BBC) principles, and Fatality Prevention Standards (FPS).
· Proven experience in conducting investigations and RCAs, developing and monitoring safety programs, and implementing behavioural and cultural safety interventions.
· Identification, prevention and elimination of safety hazards and the promotion of safety in general.
· Developing of programs and techniques to eliminate the possible causes of accidents/incidents
· Evaluation and monitoring of the effectiveness of safety programs and compliance with occupational safety and health standards and laws.
· Promotion of SH training, development and coaching.
· Valid Code B (Code 8) Driver’s License
· Own reliable and roadworthy transport
· Standby duty is an inherent requirement of the position
· Practical knowledge of occupational and environmental safety hazards, safety survey techniques, control and preventative measures.
