Introduction
The Head of Safety, Health and Wellness Management provides strategic leadership, governance, assurance, performance oversight, and technical excellence for safety, health, occupational hygiene, wellness, and process safety across ArcelorMittal South Africa. The role is responsible for developing and implementing the Safety, Health and Wellness strategy, ensuring compliance with legislative and Group requirements, driving continuous improvement, and promoting a proactive risk-based culture that protects employees, contractors, assets, and business sustainability. The incumbent serves as the principal advisor to executive leadership on Safety, Health and Wellness matters and acts as the primary interface between ArcelorMittal South Africa, ArcelorMittal Group, regulatory authorities, business units, and other external stakeholders
Job description

 
1.    Job Key Performance Areas: Strategic Leadership
 
•    Develop and maintain the Safety, Health, and Wellness strategy aligned with business objectives and ArcelorMittal Group requirements
•    Drive the implementation of strategic initiatives to improve safety, occupational health, wellness, and process safety performance.
•    Provide leadership and direction on all Safety, Health and Wellness matters.
•    Support executive leadership in setting performance targets and priorities.
•    Represent AMSA in Group Health & Safety forums and contribute to the development of corporate standards and programs.

2.    Governance, Compliance and Assurance

•    Ensure implementation and maintenance of the Safety, Health, and Wellness governance framework
•    Lead assurance, audit, and verification processes across operations.
•    Monitor compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), Environmental and Occupational Health requirements, ArcelorMittal Group Standards and Policies, Fatality Prevention Standards and AMSA’s internal policies and management systems.
•    Escalate significant risks, systemic weaknesses, and compliance concerns to the executive management.
•    Ensure closure and verification of audit findings, incidents, and management review actions. 

3.    Safety, Health, and Wellness Management

•    Develop and coordinate safety, health, and wellness programs throughout the organization
•    Ensure effective implementation of occupational health, wellness, medical surveillance, and health promotion programs.
•    Act as custodian of Safety and Health legislative compliance within the business.
•    Identify and assess hazards and risks inherent in business operations and establish appropriate mitigation strategies.
•    Establish and monitor of critical controls and risk management systems.
•    Promote a culture of prevention, accountability, and continuous improvement

4.    Performance Monitoring and Reporting

•    Consolidate, analyse, and govern Safety, Health and Wellness performance information.
•    Monitor leading and lagging indicators and identify trends requiring intervention.
•    Develop and maintain executive dashboards, reports, and management reviews.
•    Present performance results, risk profiles, and recommendations to executive leadership and relevant governance structures.
•    Ensure integrity, consistency, and quality of reported information

5.    Incident Management and Organizational Learning

•    Lead the review of fatalities, serious incidents, and significant potential incidents. 
•    Provide technical leadership and support during investigations. 
•    Review root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and verification of effectiveness. 
•    Ensure lessons learned are communicated and embedded across the organization. 
•    Monitor implementation of actions arising from incidents and corporate alerts.

6.    Risk Management and Technical Excellence

•    Provide expert guidance on occupational safety, occupational health, wellness, industrial hygiene, contractor management, and process safety.
•    Support operational management in developing and implementing robust risk management systems.
•    Promote a risk-based approach to decision making.
•    Drive implementation of critical control management principles and fatality prevention initiatives.
•    Facilitate sharing of best practices across business units.

7.    Capability Building and Culture Development

•    Develop organizational capability through training, awareness campaigns, leadership development, and competency programs.
•    Identify capability gaps and establish improvement plans.
•    Promote safety leadership, employee engagement, and behavioural excellence.
•    Strengthen safety culture, health awareness, and employee wellbeing across the organization.

8.    Stakeholder and Regulatory Engagement

•    Maintain relationships with regulatory authorities, government agencies, industry bodies, and external stakeholders.
•    Represent the company at industry forums, audits, inspections, and regulatory engagements.
•    Advise leadership on legislative developments and compliance implications.
•    Serve as liaison between ArcelorMittal Group, ArcelorMittal South Africa leadership, employees, and external stakeholders.

9.    Financial and People Management

•    Lead and develop the Safety, Health and Wellness team. 
•    Manage departmental budgets and resources. 
•    Ensure optimal organizational structure, succession planning, and talent development. 
•    Manage performance, coaching, and development of direct reports. 
•    Ensure effective deployment of resources to support strategic priorities.

Minimum requirements

•    B Honours Degree (NQF 8 / 10) in Safety Management or related discipline.
•    Management Development Program (MDP) or MBA is advantageous.
•    Professional Health & Safety qualifications are advantageous.
•    A relevant qualification in Safety / Contract Management and Certification in OHSAS 18000 / ISO 45001 will be advantageous
•    Qualification in Quality Management and Certified Quality Auditor status advantageous. 
•    Minimum 12 years’ relevant experience in a managerial role
•    Management experience within a heavy industrial, mining, manufacturing, engineering, or related environment. 
•    Demonstrated experience in strategy development, governance, compliance, risk management, and organizational leadership. 
•    Sound knowledge of South African Health & Safety legislation. 
•    Experience engaging with regulators, executive management, organized labour, and external stakeholders. 
•    Advanced understanding of occupational safety, occupational health, wellness, and risk management systems
