ArcelorMittal South Africa is looking to recruit a Safety Specialist
Job description
- Fulfil role as Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) at LP Newcastle, and AMSA-wide.
- Attend / lead Safety Meetings as identified (e.g. FPS Meeting, etc.)
- Provide coaching to change behaviours of employees and contractors
- Specialist input during various types of SHE Risk assessment process, evaluate and where assigned, approve risk ratings.
- Incident investigation (SME support / facilitation and administration/reporting, etc.)
- Monitor and measure Plants/Divisions/Sections development & roll out of improvements initiatives relevant to specific areas.
- Compilation and maintenance of all aspects of Health & Safety Management Systems in accordance with Standards requirements as well as LP strategy, in support of the Senior Systems Officer
- Analyse data, identify Safety focus areas and set standards for performance.
- Prepare accurate SH reports ensuring updating of relevant SH systems (FPS,
- SO/PSIF, Rex, SARA, Worksafe, etc.)
- Initiate, coordinate and personally execute safety related improvement projects, campaigns or actions to prevent possible re-occurrence of incidents based on identified trends, leading & lagging indicators, and other available information
- Liaise closely with Line Managers.
- Act decisively on fatality prevention standards and life saving golden rule violations with zero tolerance, also providing guidance to Line Managers regarding FPS related concerns.
- Act decisively when hazards/unsafe conditions and behaviours occur.
- Address at risk behaviour and unsafe conditions (stop the work and wait until is corrected).
- Initiate Contractor NCR’s on identification if non-compliances.
- Presence and visibility on floor, empowering employees at all levels with required knowledge and skills to:
- Speak-up when it comes to Safety
- Provide information, advice and guidance to contractors where needed.
- Continuous assistance, guidance and coaching of employees/contractors on floor.
- Working periodically on standby
Minimum requirements
Qualification:
- National Diploma (NQF 6/10) in Safety Management
Experience and Requirements:
- Minimum 18 months applicable experience in a heavy industrial Safety environment.
- Identification, prevention and elimination of safety hazards and the promotion of safety in general.
- Developing of programs and techniques to eliminate the possible causes of accidents/incidents
- Evaluation and monitoring of the effectiveness of safety programs and compliance with occupational safety and health standards and laws.
- Experience in Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) (or BBCare - BBC) principles and coaching thereof.
- Promotion of SH training, development and coaching.
- Practical knowledge of occupational and environmental safety hazards, safety survey techniques, control and preventative measures.
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (and Regulations) and/or ISO 45001:2018 knowledge.
- Excellent knowledge in Fatality Prevention Standards
